BOTANICAL EARTH ANNOUNCES MARKETING ALLIANCE
WITH BEADS for Education / DUPOTO WOMEN'S GROUP
New Gift Baskets Help Support African Women and Girls
September 20, 2006, Winfield, MO--Just in time for the holidays, Botanical Earth is introducing uniquely beautiful hand-beaded baskets made in Kenya. They can be purchased separately or filled with luxurious soaps and balms, including a new soap made from goats milk and rare essential oils sourced in Kenya. And the best news is that buying one of these baskets helps support a very worthy cause. BEADS (www.beadsforeducation.org) is a non profit group whose mission is to enhance the status of women in Africa, and to promote environmental awareness with the goal of preserving natural resources. The BEADS program provides scholarships for African girls, promotes business development for African women, and supports conservation through education.
For Debra Hendron, founder and president of Botanical Earth, the alliance with BEADS is a natural fit: "A customer asked me what I did with my miscut soaps, mentioned she sponsors a girl’s education through BEADS for Education, and said that if I ever had any extra, they would love to give them to the girls. I found out that sponsoring one of the girls through school was easy, so it was something I felt I had to do. Then I learned that the mothers of some of the girls worked at the Dupoto Center doing traditional bead work. It didn't take much for me to see I could help draw attention to them by offering their work."
The Dupoto Women's Group is one of BEADS' women's projects. Founded in 1993, the Dupoto Women's Group consists of 25 Maasai women who support more than 125 children. Making handcrafted beadwork is their primary source of income. Due to their success, the Dupoto Women's Group has received funding from USAID and has been selected as a role model for other women's groups in Kenya. BEADS supports women's groups' efforts to produce high quality products and to modify their traditional bead craft for overseas markets. Botanical Earth's BEADS baskets make an ideal holiday choice for customers who want sumptuous yet meaningful gifts. Hendron continues, "One random act can change things; my customer made a passing comment, and now Botanical Earth is fully behind BEADS--you just never know what your actions can do."
